Support tribal farmers to develop their orchard by providing fruit trees

Native Medicare Charitable Trust, known as NMCT was registered under charitable trust act in 1988. It began its activities with research on Alternate Medicines, Bio diversity conservation, Environmental Protection, Waste management, Forestry Seeds collection organization of Adivasis in Tribal villages. NMCT extended its activities by forming Self Help Groups for tribals and dalits, providing them capacity building and income generation activities. The second phase of NMCT’s focused on health and hygiene with emphasis on HIV/AIDS, Reproductive and Child Health, and also education to the unreached Tribals of Anaikatty Hills and Socio Economic Upliftment providing them a sustainable livelihood for them. A grant from the Tamilnadu AIDS Initiative that focused on transforming the lives of 1500 male sex workers (Aravanis, Kothis & Double Deckers) liberating them from poverty, exploitation and a myriad of health challenges in Coimbatore district. This was truly a transformative programme for NMCT. At present NMCT is implementing four important new projects: Care & support for HIV/AIDS infected and affected families and HIV prevention project in 4 blocks of Pollachi supported by KKS-BMZ, Germany; Integrated Tribal Development Project in tribal village Anaikatti funded by NABARD, Chennai, Prevention of HIV/AIDS programme among migrants in Tirupur district supported by TANSACS & Silai School Project in 6 six districts of Tamilnadu. VISION “Sustainable holistic development among the underserved”. OBJECTIVES

• To create awareness among the public, industrial workers and sex workers on prevention of HIV/AIDS.
• To provide care & support to the people living with HIV/AIDS and children infected/affected by HIV/AIDS.
• To undertake children focused programs on welfare and development and also maintaining a care home for the children affected by the HIV/AIDS and other vulnerable children.
• To improve the livelihood sustainability of hill tribes by promoting capacity building and empowerment and supporting for their social development through agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry & other livelihood activities.
• To undertake programmes on natural resources management and environment protection.

Story of Hope 1 : The husband of Sunanda was a painting contractor. She came to know that her husband was infected only in his terminal stage of TB. To add to this misery she was also declared as positive. She with her meager income as a daily labour in a mill is supporting her family of a son and daughter. She fell ill due to a tumor developed in her back. She needed a surgical operation but nobody supported her. She was admitted in the government hospital with our support. As she is the only earning member of the family we supported the family of this widowed woman by supporting for food and medical expenses. Sunanda is now back to her regular work as a labourer in the mill and supports her family. She recouped her health and sends her children to school regularly. Sunanda has also been referred to regular ART with our linkages with the government hospital. Story of Hope 2 : Srirangan who lives in Gopanari village decided to sell his land for a meager price of Rs 1 lakh per acre in 2010 when our field co-ordinator Sumathi saw him. Ms Sumathi convinced him about the benefit of not selling the land and guided him to develop the land by planting fruit tree saplings. Srirangan and family decided to take part in our program. Motivated by the field co-ordinator of NMCT, the tribal farmer developed an orchard with the intention to get benefit from the fruit trees he planted and he retained the land holding in his village. Mr Srirangan received constant trainings, all necessary monetary inputs and assurance of stable income once the trees start to yield. He is taken on exposure visits to other tribal areas were this project has been successfully implemented. Today he is motivating his neighbors in his village and relatives in adjacent village to develop orchards in their available land. Many tribal farmers have joined this scheme and started cultivation. They have decided not to sell the land. Srirangan did not sell his land and the land is retained for his successors.

(MANAGING TRUSTEE) The Botanist and Former Professor of Ayurvedic Medical College has many accomplishments in Research Activities in “Efficacy of Ayurvedic Medicines” “Ethno biological studies of Primitic Tribes”. He is also associated with Tamilnadu Environmental Council and Social Action Movement. He is a Resource Faculty of Southern Forest Rangers College, Consultant APAC Chennai and Advisory Board Member of Women Technology Park, Avinashilingam University and IFGTB, Coimbatore. C. DURAISAMY B.SC. HDC. (TRUSTEE) Duraisamy is a retired General Manager of the District Central Co-operation Bank, and currently sharing his experience in accounting and auditing and documentation. As a volunteer, with his 33 years of Banking service. He also volunteers as a chairperson of the Abhaya Students Shelter, the Care Home for the HIV affected Children. He is been actively involved in advocacy & linkages for the care of the underprivileged children. DR. K.K.LAKSHMANAN M. SC. (TRUSTEE) Professor Dr. K. K. Lakshmanan, Alexander Von Humboldt Fellow, Indo-US visiting Professor , established Dept of Botany in Bharathiar University, Coimbatore and was served as HOD till his retirement. He has produced 13 Ph.Ds and 45 M.Phils. Research activities: Wetland ecosystem, organic farming, Medicinal herbs. President: PV Trust, Erode. Vice-president: Parsn nestle Colors Welfare society. Formerly Head of Department of Botany and Dean, Faculty of Sciences, Bharathiyar University Coimbatore, is a guide and philosopher for the organization. He has numerous credentials in Research Activities and takes special interest and initiatives in promoting Herbal Medicines and Tribal Development. R. KALLIKUTTY B.A. (TRUSTEE) Kallikutty is a retired officer of United India Insurance Co. He is an eminent consultant in advocacy and linkages. He is closely associated with the organization through fund raising activities, since 1988. He has been actively supporting organization’s common program with his close association with corporates and Insurance Companies. K.J. MOHAMMED ALI B.SC., (TRUSTEE) He is closely associated with the organization for over 2 decades. A renowned stake holder and well wisher for the Abhaya Care Home. He supports organization for linkages with Business Communities and local administration.
